Is it illegal to shoot a stray dog on my farm to protect my animals?

I run a farm, and recently shot dead a stray dog on my land because it was being aggressive to my sheep and I was concerned it would enjoy or kill one. The owner is now threatening me with court action because she says I murdered her dog. I think I was within my rights, was I?
