Police Family Violence order (PFVO)
Hi I am inquiring as the father of my children was charged and recieved a PFVO. I don't understand why he got that as we have not been in a relationship for about a year now and we have not lived together for three years.
Hi there. In Tasmania, a Police Family Violence Order (PFVO) may be applied for by a police officer of the rank of sergeant or above against a person who has committed, or is likely to commit, a family violence offence. PFVOs are not all the same, and can contain a range of different restrictions or obligations to a person depending on the circumstances.
These may include:
- that the person vacate a house, even if the house it their
house;
- that a person surrender any firearms they have;
- that a person refrain from harassing, threatening or abusing
particular; or
- that a person not approach a particular person.
Your partner may have been the subject of a PFVO because he has become violent or threatened violence against someone else in his family (such as parents, siblings or cousins) or against a new partner he may have.
Suggested way forward
If you would like to know why this order has been made against him you might consider contacting him to ask him. The terms of the order are likely to be private, so unless he tells you about it you may have difficulty finding out this information. You may however consider contacting the Court at which the Order was made and enquiring there in order to find out why the order was made. Records of Court hearings are available to the public.
