Query on Parent Visa

My question is directed to experts in migration law. I have been an Australian citizen for 3+ yrs and am considering the idea of my parents staying with me. My father is 67years and my mother is 62 years old. They do not have any dependant children nor do they have any children outside Australia. I have looked at the Parent Visas available to their situation and have found two options, the Contributory Parent Visa or the Non-Contributory Parent Visa.

My question: As they are in NSW and have couple of months left on their Tourist visa, can I apply for a Bridging Visa with intent of applying for a Non-contributory parent visa?

Thank you for your time.

Hi there. The Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Border Protection deals with all Australian immigration issues, including the issue of visas and bridging visas to tourists, and people seeking permanent residency or citizenship.

The main reason people apply for a bridging visa is because their current Australian visa is due to expire and they want to remain in Australia while they are waiting for a decision on another Australian visa or immigration application. There are several types of bridging visas available in Australia (types A - E), each with different conditions and benefits. The choice of bridging visa depends on what the person’s situation, as well as what they want to be able to do while they hold the visa. Therefore, the appropriate visa will depend on what your parents want to do in the coming months (i.e. travel home or stay in Australia).

Decisions made by the Department of Immigration and Boarder Protection can have a significant impact on you and your family. Therefore it is very important you understand your and your parents’ options and select the appropriate visa. The immigration system is very complicated, and it can be easy to get confused and make mistakes in your application. Making visa and residency applications is expensive and time consuming, and it is advisable to have expert guidance.
